I remember reading a post where somebody suggested something like this and it got me thinking, maybe we could actually do this. I have a few ideas, either we could:

Get something up to celebrate the new year
Compose something of our own
Cover something with some extra arrangement

One thing I would have like to have done if whoever it was (sorry I cant remember!) who mentioned this mentioned it a little earlier, is do a rock/metal arrangement of In Dulci Jubilo and get it up on Christmas Eve (very popular Christmas theme, you might not recognise it from its name!)

What do you guys think? Also post if you would be up for this :)
AxAxSxS
I'm in for whatever. Maybe someone could come up with a BT divided into sections for rythm and solo overdubs and we could all do sections of both?
Checking out In Dulci Jubilo on you tube, takes forever for it to load up for me though.
Demigod
I can make BT's, every BT I use in my vids is my own, then there is also Paul who can make BT's (darkentity) plus he has the drumkit from hell which is far better than that I have haha
bassvamp13
if i had a way to record something id be down, unfortunately i dont even have a webcam, or a way to edit the vid. confused.gif

Great idea!! Im down for whatever. Lets wait and see how many ppl are actually interested, and then we'll decide what we're doing. We'll pick a tempo, a key and I can arrange some drums if thats okay.
Demigod
Sounds good, depends what people want to do first :)
kakos
once i get my camera id be down for something like this, but i think ill miss this one out
Renz
Good idea, we could make duo's?
One does rythm, other one does solo.
Cause everybody on 1 video at the same time would be a bit hard, especially since everyone has different mics and whatnot (noise etc.)
Or yeah, 1 longer song and that everyone plays a part in it.

And all wear santahats ofcourse! mellow.gif
Got myself a nice blue one.
The redder your hat, the better you play, so that one fits me perfectly, haha biggrin.gif
AxAxSxS
I really like what Paul did with Beginning of the End That track had me kinda itching to throw down some riffs on top of it. thumbsup.gif something along those lines would be cool.
Demigod
So maybe if Paul lays down the track and we add shiz on top?
Renz

Yeah!
Something along the lines of a Chapper-competition "Make great X-mas song on this track".
And we could make a BT that repeats for like 30 sec, 1 time for everyone who wants to join in. How about that?
So:
Start (random intro, idk), than you have a thing that plays for like 30 sec, played by Random Guy Number 1, you have a thing inbetween (like 2 sec or something) and that part repeats, while Dude 2 plays over it, then the part in between again, 30 sec, 2 sec, 30 sec, ... you know what I mean.
Demigod
I think rather than 1 BT repeating itself, I think the sections should be different
Renz

It's just an idea, so it's easier for Paul tongue.gif

So would you rather do a christmas oriented song, or a regular one?

i know i said i wont be doing this time around sadly ... but what about a funny xmas song ... someone dubs vocals on it something like

''Santa just cummed down your chimney'' or something like that ... confused.gif

...

OK... i admit it .....bad idea? mellow.gif
Poncho
I can do the final mixdown in Pro Tools if you guys can get me everything in .wav files on a DVD?

Don't have time to compose a backing track though and it prolly wouldn't be metal enough if I did it hehe.
Demigod
We can use mediafire to host any files to send to you, much easier :) well being as it may take a while, im not sure we will have time to finish an xmas song and get it up in time really, so maybe a regular one? Its up to you guys

Sounds good. If anyone has an absolute need to rock out with a xmas song- now is a good time to speak up. biggrin.gif

Oh, and if we are doing a regular song, let's decide on a tempo mood and the key. I'd go for something slow and groovy, yet heavy. What do you guys think? Im really excited about this!

How heavy we thinking here, we talking about 7 string meaty chugging? If so B min for the key maybe? If not D minor :) I loveeeeeeeee D minor, Adagio for tempo marking and then the rest is up to the guitar, but thats just my idea :)

nah dude, I play in E standard (at this time), no crazy dropped tunings. We could do either one, B or D minor is fine with me. :)

These guitars are pretty well made so I'd like to see it to believe it (second thoughts I don't want to see it)...

I say we just do a normal track (if anyone wants it to be really christmassy we can just dub some sleighbells over the intro). Perhaps someone has a backing track to donate to our worthy cause?
AxAxSxS
I could do a slow chuggy BT, been getting into the whole dOOm metal thing lately. Something along sabbath lines. I could arrange it so everyone gets a spot to play a version of th main riff, and a spot for a solo, My drum composition is a bit of a work in progress so maybe I could use a rudimentary beat and then turn it over to Paul for a better drum track. Lemme know if you guys want me to put this together, I could prolly have it done by tomorow

Ok. Do the backing to a click track and send that to Paul so he can build the drums around it. This is what I would do. thumbsup.gif

Lets rock out something Sabbathy dudes. cool.gif

Just to organise which is what I like to do, we should host the backing track somewhere so whoever is doing what can download it. Everyone can synch their parts, I'll upload it all as it comes in and throw it into Pro Tools and we can get something sweet going.

Also on a side note - what do we call ourselves? You gotta name the band!!!! DBZ-molition? DBZ Darksiders? DBZZ Top?

Any doommetalsongs in mind?
By the way, keep in mind that I'd like to play a part in it as well, so don't make it too hard xD
EDIT:
Another great song that we could use, or parts of it, is Dream Theater's Space-Dye Vest
AxAxSxS
Renz, there will be slow parts, I'll just make up some riffs. I have a pretty constant flow of tunes in my head, not always good, but constant.

As for names...

Venemous Prey
Bird of Slay
My guitar is in the mail (kidding)
The International uberjam project

Well, to add a few to the list:
Birds of Pray
Imperial
Drunk Birds Zhredding
Who's Beer Am I Drinking?
Prey For Salvation

Gonna come up with more later on

Rofl @ the names :P well as soon as John has nailed the riffs and stuff we can then slot in who will play where :)
AxAxSxS
OK, here's an opening riff to give a taste, let me know what you guys think.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------2-2-----------------------------------------------------
4--4444-4--4444-4--4444--------0-2-4--4444-4--4444-4--44444-----------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------3-3-2-0-------

Make it all power chords and think "Children of the Grave" for the beat. I will probably put some intro stuff first.

That
-- 2-2-
--------0-2-4 part really reminds me of the typical christmastune.

Good job, I'm curious about the outcome.
I have a question though, do you have it more metal in your head? Or softer?
Demigod
As regards to the actual video, is it being posted on one channel or does everyone want to put a copy on there channels.
Demigod
Quick word about the riff, I like the idea but I think it would sound better in compound time rather than simple time, although then it will sound almost just like Children of the Grave! Maybe changing the key might let you get away with it, but I defo think compound would be better, just my opinion though :)
bassvamp13
yeah, i like the idea of it being slow and groovy.
AxAxSxS
ok, last night i put what I had recorded so far on you tube

You can listen to it HERE

So check it out and let me know If this is to everyones liking and if I should go forward wirth it.
I think it would be cool if you guys wanted to contribute to the bt, you could put up responses with riffs that would go with it, or if anyone else wants to do a bt, post up the idea and we can decide which way we want to go with this.

A note on music theory- I has none tongue.gif so I am assuming simple time is 4/4 what would compound time be? It would be nice if I knew more of this stuff because It does affect my ability to make what I want when I record beats and such. THe track I did is in 1/8 Wich I had heard lets you do pretty much whatever you want as far as tracking drums goes. Probably not the best way to do it but it seems to work.

A note on the track, I put drums in for me to record the guitars to but i think the finished track would sound better if paul does the drums as he has a much better program for it. and his drums sounded really good on the DBZ demo he did.

Oh god... All your related vids are Dragonball Z, we really need to get the REAL DBZ up there tongue.gif
Now to the serious work, I think it sounds cool enough, wouldn't change it.
But what could be awesome, and this may be what you guys mean by the keys (I've done music school for 1.5 year (sax btw), but I quit, so I don't have much music theory), but while one plays it with 4-4-4-4 on the A-string, someone else could play it on the D-string. And if all goes well, Jono can throw in some awesome X-mas solo on it. Or somebody else who's up for it ofcourse.
What we also can add, is a duet, playing the classical X-mas theme on electric.
By the way, this colab is electric-only, right?

And FYI: it's snowing outside for the 4th day in a row, and this is something Bruges (or Flanders for that matter) hasn't seen in over a decade if I'm not mistaken! Maybe a white X-mas here, if we're lucky wink.gif
Demigod
Time for a music theory lesson then :) :

Simple time (examples are 2/4, 3/4, 4/4) are time signatures which follow a simplistic beat pattern, so if I was in 4/4, it would just be counted out as 1 2 3 4 providing all beats are crotchets, and if they werent all crotchets and they were all quavers for example, it would be counted out as 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and.

Compound time on the other hand (examples are 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8) is more complex and is what I like to call the "dum-dee-dum" timing as its more groovy :p notes are grouped differently in compound time to achieve and different rhythmic effect. Being as the examples I have given are for quaver beats (the 8 in 6/8 for eg) everything is grouped in quavers and gives the counting the effect of "1 and a 2 and a". Later on I will upload some different drum beats I can quickly rustle up on MIDI of these different time signatures in use :p or better yet I will send you two metal songs, one in simple time, one in compound time.

Got any songs that use both?
The same tab, but different timing?
I understand 1/2, 4/4, 3/4, since I had to @ musicschool (going up and down with your arm saying "Do Re Mi", god, I hated it tongue.gif )
Aah, but I think I just have it, something, gonna try to explain, correct me if I'm wrong.

Say, you take 4/4, and you play
(taking 1 string, so it's easier to explain)
1/4 - 2/4 - 3/4 - 4/4 | 1/4 - 2/4 - 3/4 - 4/4 | 1/4 - 2/4 - 3/4 - 4/4 | 1/4 - 2/4 - 3/4 - 4/4 | (this being the timethingy)
-1 --- 3 --- 2 --- 4 --- | 1 --- 3 --- 2 --- 4 --- | 1 --- 3 --- 2 --- 4 --- | 1 --- 3 --- 2 --- 4 --- (this being the tab)

And if it would be, say 6/8
1/8 - 2/8 - 3/8 - 4/8 - 5/8 - 6/8 - 7/8 - 8/8 | 1/8 - 2/8 - 3/8 - 4/8 - 5/8 - 6/8 - 7/8 - 8/8 |
-1 --- 2 --- 3 --- 4 --- 5 --- 6 --- <silence> | -1 --- 2 --- 3 --- 4 --- 5 --- 6 --- <silence> |
Something like that?
Stay in school kids, so you don't mess up like I do teehee.gif

ok, so correct me if I am wrong, but using a 1/8 time sig would let me score the drums as if they were in any of those times, depending on where I put them? Also, what time would you say that the clip is in? I am thinking it would be a compuond time, unless I am just not getting it. Also what do you think of it? I have one vote for it being ok (Renz) I'd like a little more feedback before I get crazy with it.

As for recording the parts, I was thinking once we have a bt all settled. we could just assign times to play over. So the first guy would have from 15 seconds in until 1:25, the next guy gets 1;30 - 2:15 etc. And then we could just splice the vid together. Obviosly the times I just used were arbitrary and the actual in and out points would be determined by the music. But it might be an easy way to do it.

Using the above method, if everyone submitted a vid with just thier playing on it. either by having the BT on headphones or just not including it if they are recording into reaper or protools or whatever. all I would have to do is match up thier video segments and run the backing track as background music for the video. then we would have everyone on it. The only thing this would not allow is a twin guitar solo if someone wanted to get that fancy.

1/8 isnt a time signature dude, that would mean every bar had one quaver in it. I think from listening to it, its in 3/4 but at times it indicates a possible 6/8 time signature. In terms of the actual riff itself, I like it dude, im used to fast cheesy paced riffs when im jamming so its great to jam over something a little slower). In terms of the video, I recon it would still be easier for everyone to record just the audio and then give it to poncho, then sync videos up later, thats what I do with pretty much all my videos.

Okay, now I understand the idea.
Well, let's hope the BT will arrive soon then wink.gif
(Knowing we probably won't see Paul for a while, since his Venom is being held hostage for unknown, feminent reasons)
AxAxSxS
so the 1/8 thing does work for not having a set time sig for drum tracking. It seems to allow me to match everything up. ok guys its going to get slower. I should have some sort of semi finished version up either tonight or tomorow. then we can decide if we want it longer or shorter, more or less or no intro, all that.
Until then I leave you with this very excellent video

Im gonna go with C# rather than D, being as it starts on a C# according to Johns tab :P
