Full Version: EMG 18v mod?

Just wondered if anyone had tried the 18v mod with their EMG loaded DBZ guitar, and how it'd gone?

If it works well - especially for cleans - I might just go for a BoP, a Venom, or a Cavallo with EMG's.

A set of 18 volt modded emg's in dbz will probably sound the same as modded emg's in other guitars with emgs.

What does this mod do? Never heard of it...

slanderous posted this a bit back "the 18 volt mod is suppose to give you more headroom" basically cleans them up a good bit and takes away their slight "muddyness" that ive heard some complain about when dirty, and makes the cleans sound quite a bit better. a friend of mine had this mod with a switch to go from 9 to 18 and the difference is impressive

So you need two 9 volt batteries? If that's the case, I think you're gonna have a hard time fitting 'em inside the guitar. I changed the battery in my BOP, and almost couldn't get the cover back on. But the battery had a pretty thick layer of padding, so its no problem. But I doubt you can get two in there.

I havent really seen the insides of the control cavity yet so I'm not sure but you might be able to move something around to make it work.

i say get a pic up so we can see what your working with
Geriman
That's a very good point, and was going to be my next question!

So go for it, post some pics of the insides, or see if you can fit 2 9v batteries in.

Apparently it's meant to make the cleans sound much better, and also improve the driven sound. Less compressed, brighter - just nicer, from what I can hear on youtube A/B clips.

And you can by reversable mod kits on ebay if you don't want to make your own. It even has a section on wikipedia, so I assumed it was common practice.

yeah most people who use standard 9v like playing rhytm stuff, unless you like the added "mud", but if your into really crisp solos and lead stuff 18v is the way to go if at all possible, the only downside is if your not a very clean player the pickups become quite unforgiving and will tend to give away your flaws a little more.

also i dont know if there's space for it, but i always suggest if you want to do an 18v mod install a selector switch so you can easily go between 9v and 18v depending on what sound you want thumbsup.gif if space allows of course

Finally cracked, and pulled the trigger on a Bird of Prey Radioactive from Gearhounds - they've got very good deals for international shipping folks, check 'em out.

"Only" an import, but really looking forward to this. So far all I play are super strats, so this should raise a few eyebrows.

Hopefully no graphics issues...

And could this be the first in the UK???

thumbsup.gif

Must figure out that mod.

I am toying with the idea of doing an 18 volt mod tutorial on this forum sometime soon but not sure if anyone would care haha.
jobless guitarist
dude you gotta throw it up especially for people who have issues with those diagrams, im sure everyone would appretiate a relyable tutorial on how to do this, and if you do, would you show what tools you would use for the switch mod as well?
Askrogth
Yeah I second that, would be a topic of interest regardless of whether or not everyone ran out and started trying to squeeze two batteries into their guitar biggrin.gif

ill probably end up being one of those people lol

Working on it
My guitar has a battery compartment so it wont be as nice but u should be able to see the concept.
Askrogth
Yeah its the wiring that i am interested in anyway not how to do it tidy. Also any major things to avoid would be appreciated too.

Found this:

And you can buy the "harness" on ebay.

hey guys i know some of you were talking about the space required for a mod and i got these from todd over at music farm it looks like there will be more then enough for one more battery

Looks about right thumbsup.gif I prefer an in cavity setup much more than a battery box setup anyways.

All you need is a mini toggle switch. Sometimes you will see them on guitars for coil tapping something like this.

On-On would be 9volt on or 18volt on where in theory on-off-on could might act like a kill switch but that wouldnt be something I would want to try when using batteries unless I knew what I was doing.

Sorry for the late post, but I haven't been here in a LONG time. The last reply I got was a pm from DZ. LOL.

I did the 18v mod in my old 05 Les Paul Custom and my ears couldn't hear a damn thing. I asked a bunch of people what the deal was and the general consensus was that it's more for the EMG active bass EQ stuff.

Might have been the amp you were playing it through, but I definately can hear the difference; it's far less compressed, and as such it makes it cut through a mix far better. It's subtle, but definately there, and I wouldn't do without it. Are you sure you didn't accidentally wire it in parallel rather than in series? What amp were you using?
Geriman
I'll second that: our sound guy loves the 18v sound on my BoP, says it's much easier to get it right in the mix, and it's very clear.
jobless guitarist
oh yeah, finally gut it done and it sounds incredible compared to the 9v, perhapse youre using a solid state amp?
RMP+3
Got anything recorded so we can hear?
